NYS Window Tint Inspection

 — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW —

NYS TINT INSPECTION NEAR CARMEL NY

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Will my car pass NYS Inspection with tinted windows?

The simple answer is yes, but under the legal limits. According to the NYS DMV, NYS does not permit darkened windshields or front side windows. Windshields and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of light transmittance. In other words, 70% or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window. This law is also applicable to the rear window unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The mirrors must give the driver a full and clear view behind the vehicle. Rear-side windows must also allow at least 70% of light from the outside to pass through the window if the vehicle is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback, or convertible.

2. Can I legally tint my windows in NY? Is it even worth it?

Again, the simple answer is yes. However, New York State regulates the extent to which you can. You can tint your windshield, front and rear windows (most vehicles) up to 30%; meaning, the tint cannot block more than 30% of light transmittance. If you are looking to achieve a super dark window effect, however nice it may look, your vehicle will likely fail NYS Inspection if it exceeds the maximum non-transferrable light limit. If you are satisfied with the finished look under NYS tint guidelines, then it will likely be worth your investment; though, if you exceed the limits, you will have to remove the tint you paid a pretty penny for, which is another bill in itself. Just be mindful before investing in window tint in NY.

3. How much is a tint ticket in NY?

According to the NYS DMV website, “Law enforcement officers have issued approximately 710,000 tickets for violations of the law since 2012.  If a law enforcement officer pulls you over, the penalty for illegal window tinting can be up to $150.”

4. What is the Darkest Legal Tint in NY?

The darkest legal tint, for most vehicles, is 30% or no less than 70% light transmittance.

5. How do I know how much tint I have?
